... behind doors, in cages and baskets. **My thoughts** My first thoughts on this book are that it could really benefit from naming each animal under the relevant flaps. The reason for this is that some of the illustrations are a little ambiguous, with, in my opinion, some being a little poor and too easily identifiable. After reading this through with Jake it lost his attention really quickly and on that basis I would not recommend this to such a young child (he is just one), but definitely an older children... m...more

Dear Zoo - Rod Campbell On a recent trip to the library I loaned a lot of books for Jake to give him a change from the many we have a home, and Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell was one of these. This 16 page book has an rrp of £4.99, which I feel is actually an okay price given the content. **I wrote to the zoo to send me a pet. They sent me an...** This is the test on the first page. On the facing page is a pull down flap in the shape of a wooden crate with the words 'very heavy! On the flap. Pulling the flap down reveals an elephant. This books continues to introduce children to zoo animals including a giraffe, a lion, a camel, a ...  Read the complete review

DEAR ZOO ROD CAMPBELL I have been sorting out my spare bedroom ready for my grandkid's October visit. Hence my latest dabble into reviewing children's books. I have a shelf of books in there that I use to read to and with my grandchildren and which the older ones read themselves. An old favourite ( one that I first read to my daughter who is now 20) is 'Dear Zoo' by Rod Campbell. This isn't actually the same book I read to my daughter and then my son, but is actually a 25th Anniversary board book addition I bought in 2007 when my original one fell into disrepair after many little fingers played with it. Dear Zoo was ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dear Zoo: Lift the Flaps - Rod Campbell: A fussy child wants a new pet! (360 words)
by - written on 07/07/09 (Very useful, 32 readings)

Dear Zoo is a book aimed at children and it's written by the famous children's author, Rod Campbell. The story tells of a young boy who writes to the zoo asking for a pet. They send him lots of different animals but each time he sends it back because of different reasons. Will he finally get a pet that he likes in the end? The book is very simple and there are hardly any words on each page. The text is bold and very easy to read. The pages aren't filled with lots of drawing and instead have just one picture in the middle of the page which draws the reader and listener. The main 'draw' of the book is the fact that each page has a little ...  Read the complete review

What's the title ? Dear Zoo Who'is the author ? Rod Campbell And the plot ? A child (we assume) wants a pet so they write to the zoo to ask if they will send them one. The zoo kindly sends a series of animals, which each have to be returned as they are unsuitable (a giraffe is too tall, a lion who is too fierce etc). Until at the end of the book they send a puppy, who is just right. They have now sent the perfect pet and he is kept. Is that it ? In a nutshell... yes. There must be more to it ? Okay so there is a bit more... There is a different animal on each page. The pictures ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dear Zoo: Lift the Flaps - Rod Campbell: I wrote to the zoo and they sent me (527 words)

My son was bought Dear Zoo as a birthday present for his second birthday. He does already love books but has a very short attention span and can find a long story too much to listen to and he also wants to turn the pages before I have finished a page. Dear Zoo is a book by Rod Campbell that was originally printed in 1982 although the first edition of the hardback book was not until 1988. The book is designed for under fives and uses repetition and simple phrases to develop understanding. The book is a board book which starts with the sentence" I wrote to the zoo and they sent me a pet. "The Zoo sent eight different animals. ...  Read the complete review
