Advantages: Simple story, great illustrations

Disadvantages: flaps may be pulled off so keep an eye on your child

Written by Rod Campbell, it is available as a board book, paperback and pop-up book priced around £5 (depending on which book you buy and where you buy it!) found in all good bookshops and online book stores.

Dear Zoo is about a boy who writes to the zoo asking them to send him a pet. On each double page you will find a picture of an animal carrier with an animal hiding under a flap with the story telling you why each animal is sent back to the zoo until the last page when they send him a puppy which he keeps as the perfect pet.

The book is great as it has lovely pictures of animals and the flaps you can look under making it popular with older babies and children.

You will be able to read this with your child and have lots of fun in addition to reading the story getting them to make the sound of the animal with you, naming the animal, trying to guess what the animal could be before lifting the flap. The language in the book is simple and repetitive which will help your child when learnning to read.

I had this book as a child and I loved it, I remember my brother having it after me and now I have a copy for my son too! He enjoys looking at the pictures and making noises for the lion and puppy at the moment!! He loves animals and going to the zoo so it's a great book for him, so I love sitting down and reading it with him.

Summary: Great book should be on every young childs bookshelf
