Advantages: Brilliant art, enthralling storyline, story recap at the beginning and an excellent series.
Disadvantages: The plot changes direction - could be a positive or a negative thing.
This review is about volume 7 of the Death Note series published by Viz Media and part of the Shonen Jump Advanced books.
The story is by Tsugumi Ohba and the art is by Takeshi Obata.
Death Note is rated for older teens.
The book is in the classic right-to-left style of most popular Japanese manga and all the artwork is in black and white with caption or speech bubbles.
"THE HUMAN WHOSE NAME IS WRITTEN IN THIS DEATH NOTE SHALL DIE!" Sounds like scary stuff!
WARNING! If you've not read the previous volumes of Death Note then this review will contain spoilers. Plus it's very pointless for you to read this book if you've not read any of the others, it won't make sense! Go and check out my previous reviews for the other volumes.
Volume seven is subtitled 'Zero' and has a greyish cover with a sort-of upside down L and white roses.
This volume has the usual story recap at the beginning plus a list of the characters we've already met. It also contains the occasional page of Death Note rules at the end of some chapters.
The story begins with the result of the car chase from the previous volume and for a moment L seems to gain the upper hand but we know Light, he won't allow this to be a permanent thing!
Light is even more intelligent than I gave him credit for and you'll be amazed at the genius of his plan. Even though there is a jump back in time to look at past events, it's still easy to follow the story and parts that may not have been clear before now reveal themselves.
After I'd finished this volume I initially refused to read any more of the series. I thought this book had the perfect ending to the whole story and I was worried that the whole series would be ruined by the new characters and plot. However, I have now read the others so there will be more reviews from me about them soon!
The blurb says:
"Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal...or his life?
-Zero-
After a high-speed chase, Light and the taskforce apprehend the newest Kira. Light regains his Death Note and his memories, and the depths of his cunning are revealed as the plans he carefully put in place before going into confinement are slowly unveiled. His masterful manipulation of both humans and Shinigami lead him to the strongest position he's yet enjoyed. But the glow of his victory is marred when a new threat appears. Can Light withstand a surprise attack on two fronts?"
Summary: I think I would say this is the best manga series EVER! A must-read!
