Advantages: Recap at the beginning, fantastic artwork and a brilliant story with many twists.

Disadvantages: Don't like suspense? Don't read it!

This review is about volume 5 of the Death Note series published by Viz Media and part of the Shonen Jump Advanced books.
The story is by Tsugumi Ohba and the art is by Takeshi Obata.
Death Note is rated for older teens.

The book is in the classic right-to-left style of most popular Japanese manga and all the artwork is in black and white with caption or speech bubbles.

"THE HUMAN WHOSE NAME IS WRITTEN IN THIS DEATH NOTE SHALL DIE!"

Volume five is subtitled 'Whiteout' and has a light green cover depicting L and Light with chains.

If you've not read the others in the series then where have you been?! Read my other reviews before this one as it may contain spoilers and make sure you read the other books first otherwise this one won't make any sense, despite the usual story recap and character reminder that's at the beginning.

More rules of how to use the Death Note are included at the end of some of the chapters while, as before, some just end with a blank black page.

We now know Misa was the second Kira but she hasn't given any information away, despite her incarceration. Can Light be just as strong? Will he give in or does he have a secret plan? And who is the new Kira that begins to kill while Light and Misa are in confinement? Read volume 5 for some answers!

This manga series has one of the most intricate plots I've read but, unlike others, I haven't been lost or confused at all. Everything is explained clearly and there are always little cues to remind you of past events.

I would say I'm a huge Death Note fan (hence this volume receives 5 stars just like all the previous ones) and I really have no idea how this series is going to end but I can't wait to find out.

The blurb says:
"Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal...or his life?

-Whiteout-
After a week locked up with no one but Ryuk for company, Light is ready to give up his Death Note and all memories of it. Freed from his past actions, Light is convinced his innocent. But L is ready to keep Light under lock and key forever, especially since the killings stopped once Light was incarcerated. Then a new wave of Kira crimes hits Japan. Someone else has gotten their hands on a Death Note, and these new deaths aren't focused on making the world a better place, they're focused on making money. Big business can be murder, and Kira has gone corporate!"

Summary: This series goes from strength to strength and all true manga fans should have read it.
