Advantages: The story is still brilliant, clear character and story recap at the beginning and fantastic artwork

Disadvantages: It can be a bit complicated at time.

This review is about volume 8 of the Death Note series published by Viz Media and part of the Shonen Jump Advanced books.
The story is by Tsugumi Ohba and the art is by Takeshi Obata.
Death Note is rated for older teens.

WARNING! If you've not read the previous volumes of Death Note then this review will contain spoilers. Plus it's very pointless for you to read this book if you've not read any of the others, it won't make sense! Go and check out my previous reviews for the other volumes.

The book is in the classic right-to-left style of most popular Japanese manga and all the artwork is in black and white with caption or speech bubbles.

Volume eight is subtitled 'Target' and has a dark red/maroon-colour cover with a picture of Mello in an armchair holding his trademark chocolate bar.

This volume has the usual story recap at the beginning plus a list of the characters we've already met. It also contains the occasional page of Death Note rules at the end of some chapters.

The story continues with the revelation that Chief Yagami's daughter has been kidnapped and the kidnapper will release her if they hand over the Death Note that the NPA has in its possession.

I was worried about reading this book because I thought book 7 had the perfect ending and I thought the story might just get silly from now on. But it doesn't! As with the previous volumes, the plot is very clever and you're never quite sure which way it's going to go. It's definitely not a predictable book.

There's news from the Shinigami realm which makes things just a bit more complicated but I won't say too much so I don't give it away.

This book didn't disappoint me, it's just as suspenseful and thrilling as all the previous volumes and the artwork is still fantastic.

Another good thing: as this series has been out for quite some time I've discovered the books are often discounted in online shops like Amazon.

The blurb says:
"Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But will Light's noble goal succeed, or will the Death Note turn him into the very thing he fights against?
-Target-
Light - working as Kira, the newest member of the NPA intelligence bureau, and L - has nearly succeeded in creating his ideal world. But the years of uncontested victory have made him complacent, and he is unprepared for a new attack close to home. With his younger sister Sayu kidnapped and the NPA's Death Note demanded as ransom, Light must travel across the world and confront two new adversaries, each with a very different agenda. Will Light's quick wits be a match for this new challenge, or will he be forced to choose between Kira's ambitions and his own family's lives?"

Summary: I am still loving this series which means it HAS to be good!
