Introduction Anne Perry is the author of a number of works of crime fiction set in Victorian London. There are two main series, one featuring Inspector Pitt and his wife, the other, of which this book is one, featuring William Monk, an ex-police inspector turned private investigator and his friend/later wife, Hester, who is a nurse. I first came across the books while living abroad and have varying opinions of them - they vary from the excellent - 'The Silent Cry', to the not very good, of which this particular book is probably of the latter variety.
