Bedtime Stories by Debi Gliori – Bedtime tales with a twist
Jack may only be four months old but there is never a better time to get him in to the wonderful world of books. I have so many fond memories from being a young girl and having so many wonderful books in my possession that really could take you to a completely different magical land and I so want that for my son.
After having a look in Waterstone’s and even places like Woolworth’s and Tesco’s I have come to the conclusion that children’s books are far more expensive than adult paperback books and this is probably why I remember getting al my childhood books from boot sales and such like places. With Jack still being so young I really don’t want to buy too many books for his age group as the words are limited and he’ll have no use for them soon. I would much rather buy books that I can read to him and he can look at all the wonderful pictures.
Before deciding on what books to buy for him I thought the best place I could take him would be the local library to borrow before we buy. Now it has been many years since I have been to the library myself, as I tend to buy my paperbacks cheap and then sell them off again on the Internet. So I had to reregister myself and sign Jack up for the first time. To my astonishment you could take up to 30 books away with you at a time! I was truly amazed! Well we didn’t go mad and in the end I chose 6 books that I thought would be some good and this book was one of them.
To buy this book you are looking at paying £10.99 pence but of course you could probably find it cheaper on the web and even cheaper is finding it in the library, as that is free! Now it comes as a hardback book with 80 pages inside. On each and every one of these 80 pages are illustrations drawn and coloured beautifully to really capture the imagination of the child.
The book has a total of nine stories including three rhyming stories all of which are fantastic and truly a joy to read. The stories are all about certain animals and well known characters that we all know and love. The contents page reads as follows:
Little red hen
Nail Soap
The town mouse and the country mouse (rhyme)
The lion and the Mouse (rhyme)
The tortoise and the hare
Wolf and the Rabbit
There was an old woman who swallowed a fly (rhyme)
The three little pigs
One fat cat
I can honestly say that there is not one story in particular that I like the best as they are all great stories and brilliant to read. I don’t think Jack can appreciate them as much as I would like but certainly this is one book that I will be buying for him for when he is a little older so that he can really enjoy the content of the stories themselves.
The stories all have a sort of hidden meaning or a moral behind each one so along with being fun to read, a joy to look at the illustrations the children reading or being re ad the book will also learn a little too.
I wont go into what each story is about too much but here is a little description of each one:
Little red hen – Little red hen lives with a few other animals and she finds herself doing all the chores and waiting on the others hand and foot and when no one offers to help her do the things that need doing she slyly makes a pie with the corn that she has sewn and harvested all by herself when the others refuse to help so in the end once the pie is made she says they wont want to help her eat the pie!
Nail soap – as little red hen moves house her new neighbour fox turns up hungry and wanting to eat her. Hen tricks fox into helping her unpack and make her house ready while she prepares him a soup. He does so much whilst she is trying to make the best soap ever for him that he does realise she is prolonging the soup so that he can get all the work done. At the end she fills him up on so much soap that he has no room left for eating her!
The town mouse and the country mouse – This is a brilliant little rhyme about one mouse going to visit the other mouse in the town and finding out that there really is no place like home!
The lion and the mouse – This cute little rhyme tells us of the strange but true friendship of a lion and a mouse and how the little mouse helps the lion from a trap set by poachers and even though the lion thought the mouse was useless he found out little friends can be helpful too!
The tortoise and the hare – This is the classic tale of the slower the pace wins the race but slightly adapted to a more funny and slightly modern twist.
The wolf and the rabbit – this tale tells of how a rabbit tricked the wolf by travelling all over the world in a race – But the rabbit didn’t really go anywhere and instead got family from around the globe to peek out on the wolf and make him think all along he was loosing the race – but in the end the wolf does get the better of the rabbit!
There was an old woman – everyone surely knows this rhyme which is truly magical and the illustrations that go along with it are amazing and for me this one is a real joy to read out loud for Jack as he loves the sing song way in which this should be read.
The three little pigs – again this tale has been slightly adapted to be more modern and slightly more funny but still has the main makeup of the classic tale.
One fat cat – is a tale of one greedy cat who eats so much that eventually he turns on his owner and eats her he then begins a rampage of eating everyone and everything in sight but by the end he is tricked by a small fly who gets him up a tree and when he falls from a branch his stomach pops open and everyone he has eaten falls out and has a party!
The stories are all brilliant and I would certainly recommend this book as a great Christmas present for any child of any age. It can be read to the child or when the child is older can be read by the child. The pictures are brilliant and it really is worth every penny. I myself and certainly going to return this copy to the library and buy a copy of our very own for Jack t enjoy as he gets older.
5*s
