Advantages: An interesting plot, great descriptive detail and a pleasure to read

Disadvantages: Once again it uses the Dan Brown formula for novel writing

After reading and thoroughly enjoying The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown my better half descended upon the bookshop to purchase another of his books to keep me entertained on the way to work. She returned with Deception Point, costing £6.99.

The basic outline of the story is fairly straightforward and I would say highly relevant to the USA today. After being funded by billions of dollars of federal funds, NASA the US Space Agency are coming under increase scrutiny by the new Presidential candidate, Senator Sedgwick Sexton who in his campaign calls for cost cutting measures at the ailing Agency or indeed full privatisation. The threat to NASA is very real. If Senator Sexton becomes the next President of the United States, the Agency is doomed.

This is where the main characters join us. Senator Sexton’s daughter, Rachel is a gist (Intelligence) analyst for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) is assigned by the President to verify a NASA discovery in the Artic Circle along with Michael Tolland, a scientist taken on board to verify and confirm the authenticity of NASA’s find.

Once they are taken to the amazing NASA discovery things move on quickly and it becomes obvious everything is not as it seems and the main characters are forced to fight for their lives not knowing what is real, who to trust or who is trying to eliminate them from the face of the Earth.

Is NASA's discovery genuine or is the most powerful man on Earth trying to pull of the greatest deception (and vote winner) ever?

With more twists and turns than a twisty turny thing this book was easy to read and a nightmare to put down. Like The Da Vinci Code it took a while to get into but again I’m glad I stuck with it. At 585 pages long this is not something you are going to read in one or two sittings but it was very easy to pick up on the story when I began reading again.

The way it is written was fantastic, I felt part of the action and this was down to the talents of Dan Brown and his use of the English Language. The actual length of the book in my opinion is a reflection of the amount of detail he puts into building the characters, describing atmospheres and putting the reader into the story. The political undertones throughout the book are a sad reflection on politics today but devastatingly accurate and I found myself thinking that I knew a few of the characters personally.

After reading Deception Point I have come to the conclusion that Dan Brown tends to use the same formula to all his books, with details altered and the story changed so that although you get a feeling you have read something like this before you can’t help but keep on reading. Yes he retains two strong central characters, one male the other female and sexual tension simmers not far from the surface throughout the book, there is always an unexpected twist that you can’t see coming and the actual depth of the subject matter he uses to tell the story is always first rate and used to great effect. In Deception Point Dan Brown uses larges amounts of scientific data but it is all explained in layman’s terms to ensure the reader is never confused by what is happening.

Overall, once again I have nothing but praise for Dan Brown, he has produced another cracking thriller that draws the reader in and keeps them hooked. If you like an exciting, educational read that will keep you burning the midnight oil or have any sort of interest in conspiracy theories you will love Deception Point.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
