DeKok and the Death of a Clown - A. C. Baantjer ... jewel thief and murderer. While investigating a high-stakes jewel theft, Inspector Dekok is called to check out the death of a clown found floating in a raft down the canal, an enormous knife protruding from its back. Without the slightest trace, a unique, antique jewel collection disappears from a house along the Gentlemen's Canal. As Dekok begins the investigation his assistant, Vledder, receives a call regarding a dead clown at the foot of Crier's Tower. The connection of the crimes initially eludes him, but DeKok's profession, his calling, pushes him towards the answer. DeKok and the Death of a Clown is the third new release by Speck in the celebrated Baantjer series. With an emphasis on the best possible translations, editorial consistency, and attractive cover art, this sleek series will prove that DeKok can claim success equal to that achieved in Europe where he is on a par with Maigret and Poirot.

When another of the performers is murdered, DeKok becomes seriously worried. Is there a mass murderer at loose? Or can he and Vledder track down the murderer before it is too late? The characters I have read so much detective fiction that it is rare that I come across a fictional detective who is o...more

A C Baantjer may not be a familiar name in the UK, but in Holland, he is incredibly popular and apparently one of the country’s most read authors. He was in the Dutch police force for almost 40 years and so has based much of his fiction on real life experience. The English-speaking world has only been able to read Baantjer’s work since 1992, although his first novel was published in 1959. He has been likened to characters such as Maigret and Morse; personally I think the latter is pushing things a bit too far, but he is certainly an interesting character, if not wholly original. The story Inspector DeKok and his partner, Vledder, are two of a very small ...  Read the complete review

Interesting initial set up Overly padded, poor characterisation, too trivial for the setting

Great for Wordsmiths None of note

A good hearty read Too many unanswered questions at the end

Best line: "He feels. That is his great mistake." Best scene - see below. Mockery of civil servants - not neccesarily big, but definitely clever

Interesting read. Well written Cold and slightly depressing!

Fascinating tale of bully & victim, brilliant atwood descriptions and tales as always Plot lacking in....something!
