Advantages: very simple to follow, explains how to cook things properly
Disadvantages: none
My husband bought me the Delia Smiths How to Cook book a few months ago, I think he was hinting that I can't cook lol! It is a wonderful book as it explains how to cook things properly, and how to achieve the best results. For example there is a section about eggs and she explains how to tell how old an egg is (obviously without looking at the date). You put the egg in a glass of water, if the egg is fresh it will sit horizontally, if it is a week old the egg will lie semi-horizontally, and if it is stale it floats in a vertical position. She then explains how to get the best results from your eggs, and how old the egg should be for boiling, scrambling etc. The book is split into different sections on staple foods such as bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, and eggs. For instance in the bread section she explains fully how to bake bread so that it doesn't collapse. I will be re-visiting this section, as I really want to make my own bread. The book is very simple to follow, and all the ingredients are listed with each recipe. There are very good photographs of many of the dishes, which look mouth watering. I will certainly be buying the second book Delia has made.

- 24/09/00 Good Housekeeping cookbook is packed full of information and lovely recipes, but no pictures (pictures I think come in very handy for serving suggestions) |
