Advantages: Very witty.

Disadvantages: Lacks cohesiveness

This is really a very hard book to review, and the reason for that is that it has some intangible qualities that result in a conflict in my mind. Apart from her obvious qualities as an actress, small plastic doll, or pin up on my pre-pubescent wall, Carrie Fisher does have some skill as a writer. She is witty, to the point, and avoids the tendency to wallow in self-satisfaction at the fact that someone who is as famous as she is can sell books that contain little or no actual content simply on the strength of her name. She actually does write very well.

My problem is what she writes. In this case, I had to admit that I loved this book. Every sentence was a gem, each paragraph a beauty to behold. I must say that this is one of the very few books that have ever had me laughing out loud. The problem I have with it is that it leaves me with a sense of feeling unsatisfied. Good sentences, great paragraphs, but the book overall really wasn't that good. It was little more than an excuse to put those very witty statements together. If that is the point, it works well, if there was a deeper underlying plot or meaning, it was lost on me.

If you fancy a chuckle and don't really mind the emptiness and lack of point to most of the reading, I'd recommend Woody Allen. Howvever, if you can't get hold of any of HIS writing, grab a Carrie Fisher and have a laugh. Just don't look at the work too hard. It may be lacking.
