Advantages: Brilliantly creative

Disadvantages: Id say too scary for children

The second book in the Demonata series is Demon thief! This series of books is peculiar as there are 3 main protagonists. This was done to keep the reader guessing who was going to die! The author felt readers would like to know that no one is safe, not even the main characters! Each book follows the perspective of one of these protagonists and in this book we meet the second of the trio.

His name is Kernel Fleck. I do enjoy the names Shan creates, they are as unusual as him! Anyway Kernel begins the book as a relatively normal boy. He has parents and a little brother. Up until his little brother was born he felt quite alone. He has a secret you see, as most troubled heroes do! Kernel can see lights floating around him, at first he thought this was normal but grew to understand he was the only one who can see them. He can move them if he chooses and he seems to understand them. It is these lights and his abilities that start to cause him problems. One day the lights join in front of him and form a door of sorts. A creature appears from out of the portal but then disappears again. Kernel follows and wakes up a few days later with his baby brother in his hands with no memory of what has happened. Troubled by the disappearance and sudden reappearance of their son Kernels parents choose to move. In their new town Kernel is at a fair and hell literally breaks lose. The portal opens again, this time bringing another demon with it. The demon kills a lot of people then kidnaps Kernels brother. This is where Kernels adventure begins. He must find his brother is the world of the demonta.

There are some great characters in this book. We are introduced to "the disciples". A group of humans who are waged in on going battle with the demons to stop them entering our universe. They are led by an magician named Beranabus who is fearsomely strong. Fans of the first book will find some demons and humans from the first book popping up in this one. This book is set 30 years before the first book however so expect them to be younger.

Darren Shan knows how to write horror books. Like the first there are some truly gruesome scenes. It is slightly unnerving how many ideas he has for someone to be killed! I cannot recommend this book to too young an audience for this reason but it may make it appeal to older readers. He also has the skill to create many unique demons that are disgusting to imagine. The quality of this book rivals the first. He has spent much time in making sure there are no plot holes. In a series that flickers through time this would be easy to do but Shan is a match for it.

There is a shocking end tot his book. You should not expect happy endings in this book. I did unfortunately guess the direction the book would take but I was still entranced by it. The book is utterly unputdownable!

Summary: Everyone should have one experiance with the world of Shan!
