Advantages: Great plot with Darren shans usual twists and turns
Disadvantages: New main character
Demon thief is definitely one of the best books in the Demonata series. The second book in the series introduces a different main character, Kernel Fleck. Kernel can see shapes of flashing light in the air so he decides to put them together like a jigsaw puzzle. This resulted in a window being created between his own world and the world of the demonata. Kernel goes through the window and returns a few days later with Art his younger baby brother.
Kernel's parents are worried by his actions and move to a quiet village. A year into his life in the new village an old woman summons a demon known as Cadaver who steals Art. Kernel meets with a magician by the name of Beranabus who led a group that are searching for a piece of 'Kah Gash' something with the potential to obliterate the world of the Demonata.
Following Cadaver they find Lord Loss's castle and demand that he hand over Art. Like in book one Lord Loss gets out a chessboard and traps everyone's soul inside giving Kernel three guesses to guess who the thief is. Kernel, initially guesses that Cadaver stole Art, then guess it was Lord Loss before finally realising that it was himself. He managed to do a highly complex transformation spell on Artery (who is mentioned in book one) disguising him as a baby called Art.
Berenabus tried to use Kernels powers to make a portal to the piece of 'Kah Gash' but the lights don't flash when he does that. He realises that the piece must be himself.
I think that this book was amazing, it had action, twists and turns throughout. Familiar characters such as Lord Loss and Dervish appear in this book, though it was set about thirty years before the first one when Dervish was a teenager so we do not see Grubbs in this book. Nevertheless, this is still one of the best books that Darren Shan has written.
Summary: A book too great to put down
