Advantages: Teriffic writing and a great story; King at his best (and that really *is* saying something!)

Disadvantages: Might be a bit gruesome for some

Desperation is, quite simply, fantastic. At 720 pages long, its not a quick read, but is just amazingly good.

Some horror books and films are just very unrealistic, and the way they're written is so cheap and tacky you're more likedly to laugh at it than to cry (I Know What You Did Last Summer is a good example). Desperation is nothing like that. If not written by such a talented author, the story could sound unbelievable, but King is such a talented author that he makes the story chillingly realistic.

The book is about the town of Desperation, bang in the middle of the Nevada Desert. Several people - the Carver family, a self centered writer and his roadie included - are passing through the region, and are pulled over by a 'cop'. The 'cop' takes them to the police station in Desperation. The 'cop' soon turns out to be a creep, and murders many of them. The 'cop' is not a human, though (or a robot, for that matter) but a god (not *the* God, but *a* god). Actually, the cop isn't a god but has been taken over by Tak.

I know it all sounds teribbly corny as I tell it, but in the book it is all very compulsive reading (it might surprise you, but I'm not *quite* as good a writer as Stephen King is <g>).

All in all, an extremely good book. My advice: buy it now!

I also really liked this book. I totally agree, its probably one of the best I've ever read to. I also liked the way ol' Stephen linked "The Regulators" (as Richard Bachman) to "Desperation" in a roundabout sort of way!
I would say read them both, they go together really well!!
