Magiere is a warrior like vampire hunter, she is employed by anyone and everyone to kill vampires who are plaguing villages and towns.
What her employers don't know is that the vampire terrorising the village is in fact her trusted partner Leesil, half human, half elf.
Accompanying them is Chap, a wonderful character of a dog, Leesils since being a child and now goes everywhere with them, another intrigue.
Magiere is sickened by the routine, conning villagers and receiving money fraudulently, vampires don't really exist. Leesil seems less concerned, willing to earn but tired of the routine.
Magiere wants to settle to do something consistent and honest, so she buys a tavern in Miiska but suffers an attack, by... wait for it..... a real vampire. The evil undead know about Magiere, her power and her birthright, reason enough to be concerned, their safety enormously woven in with her longevity.
Whilst hunting the vampires, as she is beholden to do, being the famous vampire hunter, she finds she is overwhelmed by strange sensations, the explanation for this...... I shall leave for you to read for yourself.
Both Magiere and Leesil have an unusual heritage which helps them on their travels and adventures and leaves room for much further development.
What they've disturbed in Miiska is a nest of vampires and it draws then out of the town, pursuing the escapees.
The story becomes that of a journey, the relationship between the two adventurers, their mission, their personal histories and their intent.
It begins with excitement, develops with a lesser degree of thrill but deepens as we get to know the characters, learning of their fears and desires and witnessing how their relationship develops now the work is real.
It is described as a mix of Lord Of The Rings and Buffy The Vampire Slayer and I'd say that's fairly accurate.
I really enjoyed the whole story and was keen to comb Amazon for the next one, which sure enough I found, furthermore, several more have been released since and created a fabulous series by Barb and JC Hendee which I would recommend to all fantasy fiction readers.
