A Scanner Darkly - Philip K. Dick:
... was my first Philip K Dick book, I picked it up because I had heard good things and couldn t get hold of a copy of the one I wanted to read. This was such a confusing book, but in a good way. The main character is a cop, undercover trying to bring down the production and distribution of Substance D, a highly addictive and devestatingly damaging fictional drug that causes irreversible brain damage with the sepera... A Scanner Darkly - Philip K. Dick ... I will start by saying I read this book *before* the film came out... but you know what? It made no difference to either. A Scanner Darkly - Like the rest of P.K. Dick s writings, is incredible. Dark, twisting, engaging and yet so real and thought provoking when compared to even today s society. The book tells (without giving too much away) of an ever-increasingly confused late thirty-something with an imbalance in his life that throws everything out of proportion... You see, this every slacker s friend, Bob, has more to him than he can afford to let on... as does his professional-drug-busting, alter-ego, "Fred..." His friends are a mish-mash of (sometime... Martian Time-Slip - Philip K. Dick ... very much enjoyed the first two Philip K. Dick novels I read – which had coincidentally been his first two (Solar Lottery and The World Jones Made) – I jumped to a mid-career novel, Martian Time-Slip, due mainly to the fact I’d bought several while half-price on Amazon. The setting, obviously enough, is Mars, circa 2001. It’s still a bleak, desolate planet, where water is precious and the few human settlers eke out something of a frontier existence, with luxuries from home only available on the black market. Incidentally, the planet is populated by a few surviving natives – little black men, known as Bleekmen, or sometimes niggers. There’s an interesting suggestio... The World Jones Made - Philip K. Dick ... World Jones Made was the second of Philip K. Dick’s sci-fi novels, originally published in 1956, and, coincidentally, the second I read. While he’s undoubtedly best known for his later Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – the novel which became the film Blade Runner – I can’t comment on his progression as a writer, merely what I thought of this book. I do know enough of Dick’s work to know that the near-future post-apocalyptic setting would become something of a staple in his writing. For some, it may take some getting used to a sci-fi novel now set in our past (c2002), but it seems Earth was radically shaken by a widespread nu...
