Advantages: Great for little boys
Disadvantages: Not so great for girls
Noah is a keen lover of the Margaret Mayo and Alex Aycliffe books as they are all based around vehicles. He is a very typical boy and loves anything of the sort. When ever we go to the library he also picks out this book but they don't seem to have it in a soft backed version so I don't tend to borrow it as it's a little young for him.
The book is all about working vehicles like tractors and diggers and dump trucks. It doesn't have a story that has a beginning middle and end, instead it prints a different vehicle on each page and tells the reader what each one does.
The text follows the same rhyming way that all of Mayo's books do and it has a very easy to read flow to it. I find that it rolls off my tongue very easily and I don't have to think about what I'm saying. I sometimes like the chant or sing the words because the text almost encourages it. The text isn't written in straight lines and tends to wiggle this way and that. This could be a problem for some but I like it as I think it adds character to the book.
The illustrations are recognizably Aycliffe's work as they have that familiar 'blockiness' to each page. The colours are bright and vibrant which gives the eye a lot of studying to do and keeps the young reader engaged in the book.
Noah loves this book not only because of the fact that it's covered with lots of different vehicles but also because the illustrations are great and he likes to join in with the repetitive nature of the words. He knows most of the story off by heart now and even though we've only read it down the library he wants to join in and remember it each and every week.
I think this is a great book for all of those little boys out there but it's also a nice one for adults to read. It retails at £4.99 which I think is a very reasonable price.
Summary: A great fun book!
