Advantages: very simple, repetitive text

Disadvantages: a little too simple as the child grows up, they soon want something with more complexity

This came as part of our Bookstart pack when my son was 18months old and has been a firm favourite ever since. The text is based around dinosaurs with opposite features/qualities and the illustrations then emphasise these. There are only a couple of words on each page so it a book that very young children can attend to from start to finish. They can also quickly learn to join in with the repetetive text. I found it encouraged eye contact as I could pause or change speed of delivery, tone etc and my son would eagerly look to me to see what was going to happen next or offer his own contribution. I have more recently found him using the adjectives from the text when playing with small world toys. It seems to me a fabulous starting point for discussion but a great participation book too and what little boy (sorry to appear sexist, I'm sure there are plenty female dino fans) doesn't love dinosaurs. We've now moved on to the 'Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs' series of books which are just as good.
