Advantages: Good story that appeals to children
Disadvantages: You may have to read it again and again and again
When bed time comes around there are some books you would rather read to your children than others, some your child loves and you read through gritted teeth, and some you both adore - Dinosaurs Love Underpants cannot fail but be in the latter category.
This book is the follow up from the award winning "Aliens Love Underpants", where we learnt that missing pants have been spirited away by Aliens. In this book we discover that the reasons for the demise of the dinosaurs was their love of underpants. The humour of this book is bound to appeal to preschoolers and won't disappoint fans of the first book by Claire Freedman and Ben Court.
The rhyming prose of the story ensures that it jogs along quite nicely, with lines like "It all began when cavemen, felt embarrassed in the nude, so someone dreamt up underpants, to stop them looking rude." The illustrations of pant obsessed dinosaurs (you really just have to go with this idea, honest), are colourful and beautifully drawn. I think we can excuse the book for the anachronism of dinosaurs stealing cavemen's pants, I am sure my five year old can learn later that men and dinosaurs never actually met - meanwhile we can both enjoy the silliness of the story. The dinosaurs go mad for pants and end up wiping each other out in a pant fight.
At 12 pages of text on double highly illustrated pages this book is just right for bed time. We have read it time and time again and probably know it off by heart, it is that kind of book.
Dinosaurs Love Underpants has a RRP of £5.99 but is currently available at Amazon for £3.35 in paperback form, which is an excellent price. If you loved the first book you will be bound to enjoy this, and even if you didn't read the first book this is sure to enthrall and amuse in equal measure.
Highly recommended, if historically a little inaccurate - I am pretty sure Tyrannosaurus Rex didn't meet his end in a fight over pants, but imagining that he and his friends were wiped out by pants certainly makes for a fantastic story.
Summary: A silly and enjoyable story that is the follow up to Aliens love Underpants
