I must confess that I approached the Dirk Gently stories with high expectations. As an avid fan of Hitchhikers (et al) I was expecting the same skill and humour to be in the stories of Dirk Gently. I was a bit disappointed. Douglas Adams is a man capable of subtle (and not so subtle) humour, the forerunner of Terry Pratchett but he did loose his way with Dirk Gently. The actual character of Dirk Gently is enjoyable, a good solid character that is believable but the stories just get too way out to be real. When I read this I had already read the first four books of the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy trilogy and must admit that I did enjoy it. But it is a long way from being the best book I have ever read. The story line does get a bit difficult to follow at times and Dirks motives do not always seem to have been thought out properly by Adams and this makes his character slightly confused. The time travelling professor is very entertaining although more could have been done with this character.
