Advantages: Time travelling fun
Disadvantages: Bit technical and still
I have never read any other books buy Adams (although I have seen the TV series), and only bought it as I was in a second hand book shop and I liked the title, and I never looked at the name of the author. Moving onto the story itself (as I assume I should), it is based around Dirk Gently (hey I wonder where the title came from), and his crime solving skills. Don't worry about the crime itself, its all a bit irrelevent, the story focuses on what happens between the points A, and B, whilst covering C, D, and Z. The story gets a bit technical when Dirk is talking about physics, or the laws of reality, philosophy, or whatever you feel most comfortable calling it. These parts whilst not my favourite, are still fun to read, and the bit with the cat is just a longer version of the tree falling over in the forest. I don't think that Adams is ever going to be remembered for this book, but it is worth a read. In fact I've read it twice, but with several years between each read, and I may well read it again in the future if I feel the need, but its not a classic, just something to fill up time with.

- 17/07/01 Interesting op. I've read this book three or four times now and I think its great, but then I've always been a fan of Douglas Adams. True, the Hitch hiker books are better, but Dirk Gently does have his moments. :) |
