Many people would be surprised to discover that there are 58 species of butterflies living in Britain today. There used to be more, but the Black-veined White, Large Tortoiseshell, Large Copper, and Mazarine Blue have all become extinct in this country in the last 100 years. More encouragingly, the Large Blue, which became extinct in Britain in 1979, has been successfully re-introduced to several sites in Southern England in recent times.
