Many people would be surprised to discover that there are 58 species of butterflies living in Britain today. There used to be more, but the Black-veined White, Large Tortoiseshell, Large Copper, and Mazarine Blue have all become extinct in this country in the last 100 years. More encouragingly, the Large Blue, which became extinct in Britain in 1979, has been successfully re-introduced to several sites in Southern England in recent times. Butterflies are among the most familiar and certainly the most beautiful insects seen in Britain. We have all seen butterflies flying through our gardens or flitting around us when we are walking in the countryside, but unless we know what we are doing, these are just chance sightings. There are a number of books available that will tell you all you need to know about these beautiful insects; Discover Butterflies in Britain will do all that as well as reveal exactly where and when you can find them.
