Advantages: Great characters, beautiful decriptions - just superb writing!
Disadvantages: None.
I first discovered Terry Pratchetts work at 12, in the form of the Last Continent. This was the first book I ever truly fell in love with; since then I've gone on to buy every one of the main Discworld books, and have read most of the books Pratchett has written in collaberation with other people. I continually go back to these books, and read the whole series at least once a year. It has developed into something of an obsession!
When reading that first book, the Last Continent, I found the way of writing very friendly and funny. I've re-read that same book many times and each time it seems to develop into something deeper and more meaningful, making you appreciate just how well Pratchett writes. Having been a little older each time I've read them, I've understood new jokes and made the links between the books and normal everyday life (for example, the Phantom of the Opera musical in the Maskerade book).
My favourite mini-series within the Discworld is those based around Sam Vimes. I've learnt to care for him as a character and the newer books based around him are just as good as the first, bringing in politics and making life evermore complicated. Although I enjoy new Discworld books, I prefer the older ones for their innocent characters and wilder ideas.
Along with the books there is lots of merchandise, ranging from figurines of the characters to prints of the late Josh Kirby, one of which I own myself. I love the designs Kirby created and each of my books (up until his death in 2001) have his covers, rather than the new illustrations.
If anyone is considering reading one of these books, I assure you you wont be disappointed; they contain something for everyone, no matter what age or what style of book you enjoy. As for the author himself, I wish him health and happiness in the future for all the joy his books have brought me.
Summary: I urge everyone to read at least one of this amazing series!
