Advantages: Gripping
Disadvantages: Sometimes gory
If you have never heard of Johnathan Kellerman before, you are missing a treat. He is the author behind the crime thriller series following Alex Delaware. Doctor Death was the first book by Kellerman I read, and it is so gripping, I have read it many times since. The focus of the book is Dr Eldon Mate, he is also given the alias of Doctor Death. This is mainly because he is the thorn in the side of the District Attorney in Los Angeles. Mate seems to be befriending travellers, and he sees it as his duty to help them on their journey down the road that ultimately leads to their death. Mate is witnessed acting in a strange manner, and even invents a machine to help with his killing, which he calls "The Humanitron". Alex Delaware, who is the base for this whole series of novels, is a child psychologist, (the same profession as the author Delaware), who works on a freelance basis for the local police department in Los Angeles. Stuck for answers, and the investigation at a dead end, Delaware calls in an old friend called Milo Sturgis, who is a homicide setective, and openly gay, which is a combination usually not found in Los Angeles. At first it seems, that the deaths are simply assisted suicides, however Sturgis soon discovers that not all of the people dying were willing victims. Alex narrates the story in first person terms, and it enables you to get a better insight into the characters and their thoughts. I love the style of writing from this book, and the twists and turns in the plot leave you eager to turn the page to satisfy your curiosity.
