I agree that there is conflict of interest that perhaps needs tighter regulation but his constant use of this imagery seems more of a rant from the author that giving any insight to the character or story. Gerard Donovan is an Irish-born novelist currently living in New York. He is also an acclaimed poet with three collections to his name. Interestingly, Donovan sees 'Doctor Salt' as being a draft and not really what he wanted to write. Strangely, he 're-wrote' the book in 2007, titled 'Sunless', and the brief info I have seen suggests it is rather different from this version. Anyway, I read his 'first draft' (!) so will give you my opinions on it. The first half of the book follows the character Sunless - no other names, just Sunless - who is clearly suffering from acute paranoia and seems to be in search of his father.
