The Story
Dogger is a soft brown toy dog who belongs to Dave. Dogger is very well loved and a little worn in places. Dave loves Dogger and takes him everywhere with him. Dave's baby brother Joe likes hard toys; Bella Dave's big sister takes seven teddies to bed with her. Dave likes only Dogger.
One afternoon when they where picking Bella up from school they noticed the school was going to have a summer fair men where putting flags up, Dave put Dogger up to the railings to show him.
On the way home Dave was very quiet. When bed-time came he said"I want Dogger" but Dogger was no where to be found.
Mum looked everywhere, Dave waited anxiously but Dogger could not be found. Dave went to bed feeling very sad.
The next day it was the School Summer Fair. There was a Fancy Dress Parade and lots of races.
One lady had a toy stall and Dave spotted Dogger for sale and ran to find his big sister Bella to help. But by the time they got back to the stall a little girl had bought him. Bella very kindly swapped a teddy she had won for Dogger and Dave was very happy he had his much loved Dogger back.
Illustrations
Illustrations are very realistic with lots of fine detail and are very well drawn with lots of things going on in the background which you and your child can talk about.
Personal experience
The older children I care for really enjoyed this story and loved the happy ending. I think it teaches children it's nice to be kind, like Bella when she gave up her new teddy bear so Dave could have his much loved Dogger back.
This book is written and illustrated by Shirley Hughes who was honoured with an OBE in 1999 for her distinguished services to children's literature. Dogger also won Kate Greenway Medal (1977) and the Dutch Silver Pencil Award (1980).
