Advantages: can be funny
Disadvantages: not much written about the actual cars
Jeremy Clarkson is an English broadcaster and writer, specialising mainly in motoring, writing columns in the Sunday Times and the Sun, and also presenting Top Gear.
I find Jeremy Clarkson's ways of describing cars like no other making even the rubbish of cars sound like Bugatti Veyron's. His views on life I also find particularly interesting, in which he is very straight to the point saying whatever he feels without a care in the world.
Anyway his book: Don't Stop Me Now. I was a little unsure what to expect in this book, given the fact that I had not read any other of his
Flicking through, you're gifted with a range of pretty car pictures ranging from the Hyundai Accent, to the Aston Martin v8 vantage, although a book isn't a book without its words, so then I began reading it.
"To Everyone except John Prescott". Sniggering at this one liner, I find it to be a perfect impression of Jeremy Clarkson... he probably doesn't care. Next we move onto a list of all the cars Clarkson reviews in the book, which I have tried to list below:
Peugeot 206 GTi, Volvo S60R, Koenigsegg CC, Caterham Seven Roadsport SV, Lamorghini Gallardo, Mazda RX-8,Noble M12 GTO-3R, TVR T350C, Porsche Carrera GT, Honda Accord Tourer Type S, Bentley Continental GT, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Porsche 911GT3, BMW 530d SE, MG SV, Fiat Panda, Kia Rhio, BMW 645Ci, Mazda3, Lotus Exige S2, Aston Martin DB9, AutoDelta 147 GTA, Subaru Legacy Outback, Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG, Mitsubishi Warrior, Ford Sportka, Toyota Corolla Verso, Mistubishi Evo VIII, Land Rover Discovery, Corvette C6, MG ZT 260, Ariel Atom, Dodge Viper, Audi S4 Cabriolet, Mercedes Benz SLK350, BMW 1 Series, Bentley Arnage, Hyundai Accent, Subaru Forester, Citroen C4, Maserati Quattroporte, Renault Vel Satis, Maserati MC12, Porsche 911, Mercedes Benz CLS 55 AMG, Fiat Multipla 1.9JTD, Peugeot 1007, Lexus GS430, Nissan 350z roadster, BMW M5, Vauxhall Monaro VXR, Rolls-Royce Phantom v. Maybach, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Ford Mustang, Volkswagon Golf R32, Bugatti Veyron, Mini Cooper S Convertable, Volkwagon Jetta, Jaguar XK Convertable, Alfa Romeo 159.
Each review he has written on average was about ¼ worth of writing about the car, and the rest about Clarkson's musings and opinions, and also happenings in his life. To condense one of Clarksons typical reviews, it would be "i was driving down the street behind an old lady doing 23mph, as if 30mph wasnt already slow enough, by the way, the Audi looked ugly."
I could now start talking about which reviews I found to be the best, although having read all 60 of them, I don't particularly have any favourite. Clarkson's humour runs right the way through the book, "learning about the unfortunate collapse of the British Empire, why Galapagos tortoises are all mental, France, reduced to the size of a small coconut, why Jeremy Paxman and the bass guitarist of AC/DC aren't so very different, the problems of being English, and God's most stupid creation". (taken from inside cover of book).
Generally I found Clarksons reviews on supercars, and really rubbish cars the best, with the more average cars being much more poorer (given exceptions). This is because I love the way in which he speaks about supercars, with his words emphasising how good the car really is; the [rubbish car] reviews I found also to be good with the way in which he compares them to other things, this time emphasising how really rubbish they are
Overall this hit will be a hit or Miss for most people. Don't think that if you love your cars you will love this book, as the pictures may be the only thing you find interesting about it. However, if u enjoy Clarkson's views on life, and also his humour, then I would certainly give this book a read.
Summary: a good read

Foxy-Lady - 12/02/08 I had a quick look at this when the book man dropped it off with his monthly offerings. Some of the write ups were really amusing :o) |
