The first time I read any of Donaldson's work was when I picked up a story he wrote in 1977 - what was to be the first part of a six-part story called 'The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever'. This is pure fantasy as in JRR Tolkien and, in my opinion, he surpasses that author at his descriptive and imaginative best. The six books are now available combined in two three-part editions published by Harper Collins.
