Fern Mary Miller is an orphan. She lives in a small house in Bristol with Dring, her nursemaid since she was a child, and Paula, her American friend and lodger. She is quiet, unadventurous and lives a safe, predictable life. To be frank she is inexperienced, naive and boring! Then out of the blue - a few months before her twenty-first birthday - she receives a letter telling her that her grandfather has died and left her a massive inheritance. This includes the old family mansion - Chatton Heights - where she spent her earliest years. These are years of which she has happily suppressed her memories.
