Advantages: creative pictures
Disadvantages: short story
This is a fantastic book for toddlers by Dorling Kindersley a Jumbo Shaped Board Book. It is about a fire engine (shape of the book) and it's crew who are Maggie, Tom, Billy and Fixit Fran. They are the Green Watch firefighters. There are only 8 pages but with brilliant details. On one side you get a few words from the story then on the other side there is a picture. Looking at it it looks like the characters have been made out of playdough (Wallace and Gromit sort of thing) and put in a toy engine. As you turn the first page it is like they have cut the side of the engine and you can see everything from where the water tank is (starts off full of water) to the equipment and the cabin. The story is about Fireman Maggie as it is her birthday and she is opening her presents in the cabin whilst Fixit Fran is trying to mend the hose with first aid plasters. Tom is sorting out the birthday cake and lighting the candles whilst Billy is eating the party food. Fixit Fran falls over a banana skin and Tom's trousers are filling with water and ends up losing them whilst Fixit Fran gets covered in bandages. As the story goes on there are other things also happening like frogs swimming in the water tank of the engine, mice are pinching the party food, a spider casts a web, a birds eggs have hatched and loads more. The story maybe short and sweet but there is so much going on in the pictures it makes story last 3 times as long. The book was given to my son for Christmas (price on the book £3.99) when he was 3 years old (now 4) and because it is made out of thick card the book is still in brilliant condition. No tares, rips or teeth marks.
