Advantages: Colourful, Interesting, Simple
Disadvantages: None
Toddler's Book of 'Fun Things to Do'. Lots of inspiration here to keep toddlers busy, interested and amused. You want to share simple activities with your little one without it being so simple that either you or they get bored after the first couple of minutes. We all know what a child's attention span is like. You just get them interested in something which they think is wonderful, think wow! a few minutes of relaxation for me and yep! you guessed it, they want to play with something else (bit like the present and box syndrome). Well, I'm sorry but you won't get that bit of relaxation here with this book but if they should get bored then just change to a different game/song. Dorling Kindersley are renown for their educational books for both adults and children. They have a way of clarifying by using excellent coloured photographs to explain the story or in the case of encyclopaedias the subject concerned without being childishly simplistic. This book is packed with games and activities but also presents an abundance of early learning opportunities. It is a hardback decent sized book (23 x 28 cms) only 46 pages long so quite light. Now I say 'only' 46 pages long, but that doesn't matter as each one is filled with colourful photos of kids carrying out various activities. Until I had my daughter I would have thought some of these toddler books were quite basic. It is only when you have a child that your realise that what you thought was 'basic' could be a mountain to them! The idea of the book really is to get the child to copy the movements/activities of the children pictured. Co-ordination and following instructions is one of the main things in the book ie. Touch your head....... your shoulders. ...... your knees ........... and your toes. Point to your eyes.... and ears.............. an
d mouth............. and nose. An example of the contents includes: WAKEY,WAKEY! A morning stretch. Potty time. Sponge your face. Brush your teeth and hair. etc.etc.etc. IN THE BATH Scrub your nails with a nail-brush. Sail a boat on a bubbly sea. Blow some foamy bubbles. Give dolly a bath, too. COLOURS (pics of little ones dressed in different coloured clothes holding the same coloured object). NUMBERS (brightly coloured basic objects ie ladybirds, oranges etc from 1 to 10) WORDLIST A list of everyday objects found in the book. You use this with your child to find the object and discuss their experience of using it. For example whatever the thing is you could ask do they have one? What is it like? Is it the same as the one in the book? My health visitor told advised me to do this when my daughter was younger. She said it isn't the fact that you are trying to teach them to read (because you are not at this age) but teaching them to interact and discuss things with you about the things that they see around them. All in all I think that although this looks a rather simple book it does encourage your toddler to pretend/discuss the examples. I am not sure of the full price, as I bought mine from a charity shop (any regulars reading this will know what I am like for economising you only need to take a look at my opinions to discover what I am like regarding bargain hunting!). I would fully recommend it to anyone who wants to spend time and encourage their child to learn. If you want to give them something to keep them quite whilst you do your thing don't bother, it takes at least two to interact.
