Advantages: Smart, funny and very likeable

Disadvantages: None

Perhaps the only great comedy thriller to set around the world of championship bass fishing, Carl Hiaasen's 'Double Whammy' is a completely mental thriller, featuring the hapless private eye RJ Decker, still desperately in love with his ex-wife, a bunch of seriously insane sports fishermen, and a corrupt politician.

All the usual Hiaasen elements are all present and correct - violence, satire, endless slapstick gags - though the ecological concerns which have come to dominate his novels are not as forcefully asserted here. Indeed, the one really odd thing about this book, one of his earliest, is the way in which it still works as a conventional crime thriller (just), with murders to be investigated, a plot to be resolved and some question over how events will come out.

Some people will thus probably prefer 'Double Whammy' to his later farces, although it is not as aggressively funny as 'Tourist Season' or 'Native Tongue'. It is, for anyone, a superb entertainment.
