I have a thirteen-year-old boy who has been having private tuition with me for just over four years now, and he still struggles with reading passages that are intended for Year 8 pupils. It does help of course to find reading material whose subject matter is interesting, but it still needs to be at the right level. One Friday a few months ago I saw the Rising Stars Download series of books advertised in the Times Educational Supplement.
