Advantages: Informative, good results, you can eat!

Disadvantages: not cheap

I bought a copy of the Dr Atkins New Diet revolution about a week and a half ago, as I was curious as to why this book is storming into the top 10 bestsellers of every online bookstore I was browsing. I was not expecting any great ‘wonder revelations’ (I have tried most diets, successful with some more than others…) and was a firm believer that if you ate sensibly and restricted your fat intake then you would lose weight – simple!! Except this only happens for a while and then your scales inexplicably get stuck… and then you think sod this and head for the fridge.

The one thing that would weaken my resolve every time would be hunger, and yes we can all put up with a bit of discomfort when we are seeing results but when those results dry up we are bound to return to our old way of eating.

Dr Atkins states that we have been lied to, that we have become victims of carbohydrate addiction. This excess of carbohydrates that we pump into our bodies every day causes us to produce more insulin than we need and this insulin converts the surplus carbohydrate into fat for the bodies later use should we ever need it (you know in times of famine…)

This book explains that the last thing overweight people need is a diet that is high in carbohydrates, by restricting these the body corrects it’s metabolic imbalance and starts burning the fat stores for energy. The Carbohydrate level needs to be low enough to force the body into a state of Ketosis that literally means ‘the process of dissolving fat’

Now since I’ve been talking about this, lots of people have said to me “oh, that’s that diet high in fat isn’t it?” and “ I think I saw a program about this diet and other Doctors claimed it could be bad for your kidneys / liver etc.” To be truthful, all these concerns have been raised. However Dr Atkins refutes every one of them with
some pretty convincing research reports, references and statistics.

The reason for inclusion of fat in this diet is a simple one, it satisfies the body for longer.

I have been on the ‘strictest’ part of this regime, called the 2 Week Induction Diet, for 5 days and can quite honestly say I haven’t felt hungry once. So much so I was convinced that by the end of the first week I will have gained ½ a stone or more…. But it’s not happening, curiously I am losing… almost a pound a day so far.

Anyway, this is why I am going round Tescos putting cream, butter, sausages, pate and other previously forbidden goodies into my trolley, and why I am eating bacon and eggs for breakfast and fried steak and salad for tea…

I loved this diet too! I was really happy on it - never hungry and happily losing weight. Then I took part in some "voluntary health screening" at work. The nurse really laid into me about my diet and gave me a telling off. She scared me off it. So now I am eating all kinds of junk foods and not losing any weight.... I really don't know what to eat anymore!! If you are still on it, good luck! Bacon and eggs...mmmmmmm!

I am a really big fan of this diet and for me it is the only one to actually work. I love bread, pasta and rice and pretty much lived on them, but I always felt bloated and uncomfortable after eating them. I first tried this diet last year and was amazed at how it worked. I didn't find myself hungry and it almost didn't feel like I was on a diet as I could eat cooked breakfasts, cheese and all previously forbidden foods. What I found hardest was the process of re-educating myself with regards to what to look for on food packages. I was so used to looking at the calories and fat it was like second nature to me.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say was that it does work and it keeps on working. Usually I would get to a stage where I couldn't lose anymore weight no matter how hard I tried. Good luck!!!
