Dracula Unbound.
Author Brian W Aldiss.
The book is described as a 'Meta-Fiction' which is a fictional story about a fictional story, Got that?
The story is based around Joe Bodenland and his adventures and battles through time.
The story starts promisingly enough with a line of slave humans traipsing along, going back to their slave tower, or bastion, whilst flying overhead is a guardian or 'Fleet one'.
The time is the end of time and Draculas minions are moving through time bringing people forward to help maintain his tower or as it is known 'The Mechanism'.
It's an intriguing start which does hook you in to continue reading.
I won't give a full synopsis but just a few highlights/teasers.
A grave is found in the desert with a 65 millions year old coffin inside.
Inside the coffin is a 65 million year old skeleton and in its ribs in a Silver Bullet.
And then a 2nd grave is found but this time the corpse has a stake through its heart.
A ghost train travelling through time which Joe has got to get on. But when he and Bernard manage to board it they find surprises and horrors in equal measure........
The book does go off the boil a bit when Joe meets Bram Stoker and Doctor Van Helsing. It falters slightly here but does give some explanation of where and how vampires exist.
Cast;
Joe Bodenland - Scientist and adventurer.
Mina Legrand - Joe's partner and almost wife.
Bernard Clift - Archaeologist.
Larry Bodenland - Son of Joe.
Kylie Bodenland - Larrys wife.
Bram Stoker - Author and adventurer.
Spinxs - Bram Stokers gardener.
Dracula - The Original Vampire
The Fleet Ones - Draculas minions
Vampires - The undead in servitude to Dracula and the Fleet ones.
Renfield - Inmate at Mental Asylum
The ending of the book is hugely disappointing. The detonation of the 'F' bomb and the destruction of the time train leave far too many questions unanswered.
Draculas 'Mechanism' or tower is never properly explained; in fact it is never touched upon again.
Maybe a sequel was planned, if there is one I won't go out of my way to find it.
To sum up, Too many loose ends!
Greg.
Summary: A so so read.
