===Who is the author?=== Anne McCaffrey is one of the world's best -loved science/fiction fantasy writers, who has won the Hugo and Nebula Awards, as well as many others. She is probably best known for her' Chronicles of Pern' series, of which this is the eighth full-length novel (it is actually the ninth book, but the one immediately before it - 'Nerilka's Story' - is really more of a long short story!). ===What kind of book is it?=== Interestingly, since all the previous Pern books are distinctly works of fantasy, this particular novel has much more of a pure science fiction feel. Full on intrigue in the fantasy fiction genre Eventually the series will have to end

A gripping fast flowing book that's impossible to put down. Once you've read 3 or 4 they all start to look the same.

Great story, great characters, great attention to detail No complaints here

By Jove it's good Lordy, but it's long

Better than the other books, and the plot just gets better and better It ends and the sequel isn't out yet. Booo!

A very welcome return to a familiar cast of old friends.... You may lose much of the impact if you have not read the Farseer and Liveship series'
