Dragonsong - Anne McCaffrey
by whiteroseuk - written on 07/02/09 (Very useful, 154 readings)
Rating:
When you read Anne McCaffrey s Dragonriders of Pern series, she recommends Dragonsong to be the third one you read. It s timeline actually coincides with the second book, Dragonquest, so the events you read about are taking place simultaneously with what you have already read in Dragonquest. This can be read as a standalone novel, but Anne herself recommends reading them in this sequence. *Please note, this review may contain spoilers for the previous books in the sequence* The Author Anne McCaffrey was born in 1926 in Cambridge Massachusetts. She graduated from Radcliffe College, majoring in Slavonic Languages and Literatures. She tried various careers, including ...

that were created from the fire lizards. A tripartite system of Holds (land owning, farming communities), Halls (craft groups) and Weyrs (The Dragons and their riders) is the backdrop to Anne McCaffrey’s Pern tales. A short chapter condenses this history into a prologue for this book, giving the reader a fair grasp of the context of the story, whether or not they have read the previous books. This seems to me like an excellent way of transporting readers to that sort of simple romantic environment that good fantasy summons up so well and explaining the presence of mythical dragons. Her back drops, like her characters are slightly hyper-real and fairly extreme, but ...

Dragonquest - Anne McCaffrey

Overview --------------- Many turns ago, the planet of Pern was colonised by humans. Metal was scarce on this world, so the fuel for the diggers soon ran out, and these were thereafter cannibalised for parts, and after some time were forgotten. The ships that brought the first humans to Pern were abandoned and lost. Pern had an enemy - a neighbour planet that came to be called the "Red Star". Every 200 turns or so, the Red Star would pass fairly close to Pern on its elliptical path around their sun. When this happened, a life form called "Threads" bridged the gap between the two planets and sucked the life out of anything that lie in its ...
