I enjoy writing opinions on children’s books, so today I have given myself an exceptionally hard challenge as this book has exactly 20 words written in the whole book.

I first hired this book out of our local library for my son, he was very young at the time and I was really only going for a picture book, that was brightly coloured and caught his attention. This book caught my eye mostly because the duck on the front cover looked completely cheesed off and very dirty and it made me laugh.

The author’s name is Satoshi Kitamura and the author has written several similar books called Cat is sleepy, Squirrel is hungry and Dog is thirsty. This book was first published in 1996 by Anderson Books.

The book itself is very hard wearing and can hurt whilst being hit over the head with it by your little angels!!

Now let me tell you about the story, of course it follows a duck that decides to go out for a walk. The first page just shows the duck walking on the grass past trees and flowers. To make the book a little more interesting to the children I added my own personal touch of a poor attempt at whistling whilst he walked. (Sad I know) Next it starts to rain and the books says “Uh-oh its raining” this little sentence had alarm bells ringing in my ears as it reminded me of those horrible Teletubbies. The poor duck looks up into the sky to look at the rain, the sound effects I added to this page was “pitter patter” this always made Luke laugh so well worth the extra effort I thought. “Uh-oh it’s muddy” please STOP saying that, anyway the duck is now has dirty feet and is squelching in the mud. Sound effects “squelch Squelch” noise. Poor old duck its now windy and he is struggling along in the wind, leaves falling into his face. “whoosh whoosh” another amused giggle from my son. Oh dear poor duck he falls over in the mud, “Splat” goes the s
ound effects, my son is now is hysterics as this is his favourite part. The next thing duck decides to do is splash into the pond. Duck is now happy again and feels much better now he is nice and clean.

So overall opinion on the book was that it is pretty basic and to make it readable time after time sound effects are needed. There is no educational value to the book, but books are to be enjoyed and are not always needed to be educational all of the time. On the plus side as I said it can withstand some rough play, so ideal if they want a little nosy at it on their own and there is no chance whatsoever that the book will be torn.
