Advantages: original world and story, betrayal, love , subterfuge and murder
Disadvantages: leaves you wanting more
Dune is a world famous book and has sold millions of copies around the world as well as being made into a film and string of computer game titles. It is still selling today and has won the Nebula and Hugo awards – two of the highest sci-fi writing awards around. First released in 1966 it is still one of the best sci-fi books around even today. Dune is the first of six books in the Dune series that Frank Herbert wrote. Since his death in1986 his son Brian Herbert has written three sequels to Dune using notes and discussions he had with his father. The story is about a boy, Paul Atreides, journey to becoming a prophet and freeing the nation of Dune against its political oppressors who are after it’s unique supply of “spice.” The spice is a much sort after drug throughout the universe and whoever controls the drug can become a power in the universe. Hence the prophet of Dune has to take on the Emperor. The setting is of a universe or system of planets controlled by a series of prominent families the most prominent or powerful is called emperor. The book is very enjoyable to read and unsurprisingly is hard to put down once you start reading. The original story combined with plot twists, subterfuge and betrayal is what makes it a true classic crossing all genres of writing. There is not anything bad about the book and it is a very accomplished piece of writing. The only thing that you could perhaps criticize is that sometimes the ideas or explanations of what a thing means is not very complete and leaves you a bit unsatisfied but that is probably very over-critical. So if you are a fan of the sci-fi genre then you will appreciate this book and how it has influenced a lot of writers in this genre.
