Set in Stone - Robert Goddard
by aefra - written on 22/11/03 (Very useful, 391 readings)
Rating:
I took Robert Goddard's Set in Stone from the library shelf as a standby in case I finished my favoured choice too quickly. I had not read the author before and only glanced at the reviews on the back cover before deciding, "That'll do". In fact I wearied of my first selection and, giving up on it, turned to the alternative read to find a gem of a mystery story which I didn't want to put down. This is a story which takes us from quiet beginnings as Tony Sheridan grieves for his wife, Marina, found dead at the bottom of a Cornish cliff. Feeling her close to him as the bereft do, he tells her of the events which followed and so takes us with ...

Quite a lot actually, because, like all his books, it ...

Rating:
Robert Goddard has written some of the most compulsively readable thrillers I have come across in recent years. He invariably constructs complex plots, drawing the reader in as the novel gathers pace. Finally, the strands are unravelled in what is a satisfying, frequently moving conclusion. Most readers will be full of admiration for Goddard's skill and will look forward to his next book. Unfortunately, I believe those of us who have looked forward to Sea Change will have been pretty disappointed. Goddard has written of a laborious chase across 18th century Europe, with a lacklustre group of individuals in search of a ledger which will reveal the secrets of the South Sea Bubble. For ...
