Advantages: wonderful illustrations

Disadvantages: none

'Each Peach Pear Plum' is an excelent book for little people and youc an buy it either as a paper book or a board book. It's been around for ages - I remember it from when I was a kid, and I loved it to much that I learned it by heart!

The premise is simple yet clever, and follows a pattern, which seems to help little people cope with following it. On the first page we meet Tom Thumb, on the next we see him doing something and are introduced to a new nursery rhyme character who is hiding in the background, and then we see them doing something and there's yet another new person and on it goes. Each new character is hiding somewhere in the illustration and you can have great fun trying to find them. There is a story - simple again and quite fun.

The bringing together of lots of fairy tale characters is excellent, because most children are going to recognise most of the figures here, which makes it very accessible. However, because itas something new and doesn't really touch on any of the stories the characetrs are usually in, it isn't dull.

What really makes the book come to life however is the illustration - detailed and beautifully done, perfectly suited to the words and conveying the I spy element of the book. I think its quite a stimulating read for a child, because there's so much to look at and because they are asked to find figures within the pictures. You could spend a lot of time just looking at all the details and pointing out things of interest.

I bought a nice, durable board book version (two for about five pounds in Waterstones at the moment). James, at seven and a bit months is probably a bit younger than the intended audience, but he seemed to enjoy me reading it to him none the less, and he definitely liked all the pictures. This is clearly a book that's going to last for a long time, right through toddler hood and into him elarning to read, which makes it excellent value for money. It
s such a sweet and endaring book that I can't imagine I'm ever going to get sick of it myself, which is also an advantage.

I remember reading this for my daughter many years ago. We've probably still got it somewhere! Excellent op!
