Premise: I'm not really into American fiction. But a last-minute desperate purchase from Prague airport - where the threat of a long flight with nothing but the inflight magazine for reading pleasure was looming large - introduced me to the pleasures of Stephen Dobyns' writing. No, the book wasn't the one I'm reviewing now, rather it was his relatively well-known Boy in the Water. At the time I wanted something not too complicated, but possibly intriguing.
