Advantages: Classic Story Telling
Disadvantages: None really
David Eddings is one of my all time favorite Fantasy Authors. He wrote some excellent books over the years that I have really enjoyed. However he sadly died a few months back at the age of 77. I wanted to review him in general as I so enjoyed many of his books.
David Eddings was born in Washington State in America back in 1931. He spent most of his life in America and its where he did his writing. His first books of any real note were the Belgariad series which consisted of five books. Pawn of prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magicians Gambit, Castle of Wizardry and Enchanters end game. These were the first books he released on a big scale and were a massive sucess. Eddings early work was loved by many and he developed a massive fan base.
Since his first books he went on to write many other books set in different worlds with different characters and stories. Have not read all his books, but as yet have not found one that I have not enjoyed.
The first books I read were the first one he wrote, the Belgariad. I loved these books, and think after Lord of the Rings these were the first fantasy books I ever read. They really cemented in my head the fact that this was the kind of book I enjoyed.
Eddings has a wonderfully simple style to his writing. Its classic Tolkien sort of writing. Unlikely hero finds there is more to his life than he knows. He discovers he has powers and talents he was unaware off. Goes of on a quest to save the world from inpending doom. This is a very simple story but it works so well in fantasy. Some people might see it as to similar to other fantasy but I say, if it aint broke, don't fix it!
Eddings is briliant at telling the story and putting you in his own little world that he has created. He really gives you a sense of what is going on and makes you a part of the story. The characters are easy to identify with and we soon come to be emotionally involved with them.
Eddings for me was one of the best Fantasy writerst there have ever been and I look forward to reading some of his other books that I have not tried yet. Anyone who enjoys fantasy will I am sure enjoy reading any of Eddings' books.
Overall would say this is a classic author who was perfect at doing what so many others have tried over the years. Writing a good fairytale! He will be missed in the fantasy world but am sure his books will be popular for many more years into the future!
Summary: A Great Author
