This is another great book in David McKee's series of books about Elmer. ~ Who is Elmer? ~ An elephant with a difference! Instead of being a bog standard grey elephant, this lovable patchwork elephant was first introduced to children in 1989 with the book entitled 'Elmer'. I particularly like the concept of Elmer as it demonstrates that we aren't all the same and how his friends and family accept her for who she is, not what she looks like. But there is someone else who's different in the jungle, her cousin, Wilbur, he's a black and white elephant. I mention Wilbur as he is the other main character in this particular book. ...

In case you didn't know, Elmer is an elephant. Elmer lives with a herd of other elephants, he's popular, funny, and always keeps the other elephants amused. The only unusual thing about Elmer is that Elmer is not 'elephant colour'. Oh no, Elmer is multicoloured, technicoloured patchwork, original and unique. David McKee's creation, featured in several different 'Elmer' books, celebrates the importance of being different. No mean feat, it takes us adults years of awkwardness, embaressment, and wanting to be the same as our class mates and peers, only to realise that to be an individual is great. Elmer is a patchwork elephant and a very appealing character. The main idea through all the Elmer books is that it's alright to be different. Elmer often plays practical jokes on the other elephants which always work out right in the end. In this particular book Elmer is aided by his cousin Wilbur. Elmer pretends to be blown away on what is the windiest day ever. When the laughter dies down Elmer reassures the other elephants that it's impossible for a heavy elephant to be blown away - and is then blown away for real. He is blown far away into the jungle and it takes some time for him to return to the herd. Of course none of the other elephants ...
