Stories of people in high society falling in love with people of the lower class or servilitude are not exactly new, and the usual storylines of the family acting indignant and unyieldingly to their son's unacceptable affections, that in the end usually results in the son getting his way as love conquers all, have been done plenty of times in the past in many different media. Kaori Mori's Emma (published between 2002 and 2006) is really not that much different to the usual pattern, but is notable for the fact that it is actually a manga set in 19th Century England, something that is not immediately usual for a Japanese mangaka to do.
