Advantages: Sorts you out from the inside
Disadvantages: None
A fantastic book and the top of my mind and spirit books list. This book allows you to gently come to terms with the everyday struggles in life and realise that you are not on your own in any of this. It explains why we have all these desires and when achieved do not bring the feelings of fulfilment that we had expected, leaving us deflated and searching. Through exercises and the expressions of simple affimations (ways of talking to yourself) this book guides you to a true sense of happiness. By taking away the importance of future plans and worries you can learn to appreciate the simple everyday things that can really grind us down. Susan Jeffers makes seeing life from a new uncluttered perspective easy with short quotations and small paragraphs that can be dipped in and out of (once you have read the book through). I find that the book has an answer to most of my problems and can easily put me back on the right mind set. It does not take long to realise that you are enough as you are, and not when you're slimmer, less depressed, closer to family or have got that promotion. The teachings give you the freedom to accept yourself as you are NOW and enjoy life. It does not promise to make life miraculously free of problems but gives you the tools to cope in a positive way and stops you becoming a victim of circumstances. Postponing happiness to 'when I go to college, get that promotion or move house etc' makes you wish your life away and you could be missing out on so much because your focus is not on the here and now. The contents of this book explains how to enjoy everything, even the mundane things. After all if you struggle up that career ladder then at the top realise its leaning against the wrong wall, then what? Using the book helps you to let go of all the 'I shoulds' and makes you realise that all the self talk of 'I should be exercising, be perfect, answer the phone, make
lots of money etc etc' only leads to pressure of trying to attain impossible goals and never acheiving. In essence you let go of all the mental anguish that ties us to the depths of struggle and allows you to walk free. This book is about becoming a human BEING instead of a 'human DOING'! Once you get in to the swing of this book you can stay 'topped up' when things get you down by dipping in to the text or randomly reading the quotations. I would rather carry this book than a travel map, as being mentally well and free gives you the ticket to coping with anything....even getting lost!
