WHY I WAS ATTRACTED TO THE BOOK While I don't usually lean toward historical novels, the name of this poet rang a dim bell. It was interesting to me that after several volumes of poetry she had turned to prose, and I wondered why. Shortly thereafter I read that she visited the State of Missouri in an attempt to trace her roots, and was touched by historical data she ran across regarding the American Civil War in that area. Admittedly, I'm a browser in book shops so on my next foray I picked it off the shelf and was hooked after two pages. It turned out to be one of the most well written and emotionally affecting books I've ever come ...  Read the complete review
