Advantages: Charming and will make you laugh

Disadvantages: Will possibly make you cry too

I have loved and laughed at Deric Longden’s books for many years and I found “Enough to Make a Cat Laugh” whilst browsing on Amazon. Having been reading more ‘serious’ books recently the thought of his light hearted style of writing really appealed to me so I ordered the book.

The book chronicles a year in the life of the Longden household, starting with spring then summer, autumn and finishing with winter. The ‘household’ consists of Deric, his wife Aileen and their four cats: Arthur, Thermal, Tigger and Frink. Other members of the family include Arthur’s wire brush and a sultana called Ralph – but you will have to read the book if you want to know more about these two!

This is a book guaranteed to make you laugh if you have any connection with cats in the house yourself but, on the other hand, it is equally able to move you to tears.

For those not already familiar with his writing, Deric’s wife – writer Aileen Armitage – is registered blind and occasionally makes mistakes where the cats are concerned. Although, according to her husband, she doesn’t often trip over them these days, there is the danger that they could be mistaken for an old cardigan or inadvertently locked in the cellar or shut in the washing machine. You get to feel that you know Deric, Aileen and the cats – and the various visiting neighbours and their cats as well.

I’m sure that cat lovers will find many similarities with their own feline friends – I know I did. However, there are also many differences. For instance, MY cats have never (yet) been accused of terrorising dogs being walked past the house even though they are probably bigger cats than his! I WAS pleased to read that mine aren’t the only ones who insist on accompanying me to the bathroom and making sure that the toilet is flushed properly!

This is a charming book and I’m certainly glad that I found it. It is currently available from Amazon for £6.99 and I would certainly recommend it to all cat lovers – and anyone else who is not totally against people sharing their lives with them. I shall certainly read all the Longden books I’ve missed and I look forward to his latest – due to be published in May.

I hope this has been of interest to you and I thank you for reading it.
