I'm a really big fan of the Need series by Carrie Jones. I read Need back in January, and Captivate a few months later. I loved them both, but I think Entice has to be my favourite one! I originally thought that Entice would be the last book, and that it was a trilogy, but I recently found out that there is more books to come! Which is very good, because I seriously need more after finishing that last scene of Entice..
Zara has been turned into Astley's pixie queen (willingly, of course). Which means she can finally rescue Nick from Valhalla, the other realm where warriors go to battle..for life. But it's not all that easy unfortunately. It seems like every single time they find some sort of clue that could help them to find out how to get to Valhalla, something goes wrong. "Wrong, what do you mean wrong?" you ask. Well, to put it plainly, somebody ends up dead. And what happens when they find Nick, who hates pixies? Will he accept her or will his feelings towards her have to change?
The character development in Entice is fabulous. Zara has an awful lot to deal with, and even though she's now (the/a?) pixie queen, she's still the same person, insecure, scared, and eager to hide her 'pixieness' after all, she only did it for Nick. But I thought she was really strong in this book and would go to great lengths for her friends.
I didn't really like Astley when we first met him, But there's something about him that makes you wonder..I especially love him for how he sees Zara, he doesn't really care if she's a human or a pixie, and is always there for her. It's kind of.. necessary since she is His Queen, but even before she was turned, he was so nice to her! He has problems of his own to deal with, with there being a traitor in the midst of his pixies. I'm still Team Nick, but I'm bordering Team Astley..what about you guys?
In regards to the relationship between Zara and Astley, hmm. In the previous book, we saw the two of them getting quite close, but it wasn't really something the others (Nick, Devyn and Issie) thought was something 'good', but Entice shows us when things are a lot more complicated. Nick doesn't make an appearance in the book, except for the end, which means that Zara gets to spend more time with Astley. It's not all fun and games though, they've both got to find a way to Valhalla, but there is certainly some tension between the two. I feel for Astley, he really cares about her..who knows what going to happen next with the three of them? Perhaps a love triangle? But it's not that clear if Astley has romantic feelings for Zara..hmm.
From the very start we get a lot of action and it is awesome! There's always something exciting going on which kept me on the edge of my seat, turning pages rapidly, clearly better than what I was originally expecting!
Entice is the third book in the 'Need Pixies' series by Carrie Jones. It will be published on 4th January 2011 by Bloomsbury and the book is 272 pages long. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy for review.
So a quick catch up if you haven't had a chance to read any of the books in this series yet.
When Zara's mother got worried about how she was acting, after the death of her step father, she sent her away to live with her Grandmother. After moving, Zara quickly realised that there is a lot more to life than what she had imagined. Pixies really exist and they have blue skin and sharp teeth. If their King doesn't have a Queen then they will pretty much go after any human boy that they can get their hands on. Not all cute and exciting like you'd have imagined. Shape shifters also exist and Zara's new boyfriend is a werewolf.
After Nick died and was taken away to Valhalla, Zara and her friends decided that they needed to come up with a plan to save him and bring him home. Of course, things are not always very easy in Bedford. Teenagers are going missing left, right and centre and evil pixies are to blame. With a massive war about to break about Zara needs to figure out how to get to Valhalla...and fast. Zara is also now a pixie herself, after being kissed by a King. As a pixie and a Queen, is Nick even going to still want her if she can find him?
What I thought
Carrie Jones' Need Pixies series has been one of my favourites for a while now because of how different it is compared to other books in the genre. When Entice came in the post, I couldn't wait to read it and put down everything in order to do so.
Each character develops quite a lot in this instalment of the series but especially Zara and Astley. Zara has a lot to deal with in all aspects of her life. She's still expected to go to school, attempt to get rid of the nasty pixies, find her boyfriend Nick as well as dealing with her feelings for Astley. Zara also has to deal with how the people around her feel about her now that she has turned into a pixie herself. That's quite a lot for a teenager to deal with but I thought that Zara did really well, given the circumstances. She's quite a strong character now and isn't afraid to go for it when it comes to something that she truly believes in.
At times, Astley comes over as a completely different person. Due to having to see his mother, we get to see a softer, more vulnerable side to Astley and this was one which I really liked. From the first time he appeared in the series, he has been made out to be quite the bad guy and someone that Zara definitely shouldn't be spending time with but I had a hard time believing this. I always thought that there was a lot more to Astley that was being shown and Entice proved me right. I liked Astley before this book but now I really do love him.
I REALLY enjoyed how Zara and Astley's relationship began to progress in this book. Captivate saw them get a lot closer but Entice took everything to a whole new level. Without Nick around, Zara has had more free time (if you don't count hunting evil pixies) and a lot of that time is spent with Astley. I liked him from the moment he turned up and have always been hoping that Zara will end up with him instead of Nick. I still have no idea what is going to happen in that department but at the minute, it seems like it is still anyone's game.
There is a lot more action in this book compared to the previous two in the series. There always seemed to be something exciting happening, whether it be a fight scene or Zara and Astley going on a bit of a mission. Even though I really like the romance aspects of this book, the action and intensity was really what got me reading as quickly as I could. The plot moves forward at quite a fast pace, with very few pages slowing down. Each page brought something new and interesting and I couldn't read quick enough to find out what was going to happen next.
Entice is by far my favourite book in this series so far. There is a lot of excitement, action and romance and blended together extremely well. I cant wait to find out what is in store for Zara and her friends and who she will eventually end up with.
