Equus is a superb and thoroughly disturbing play. I've read it, seen it on the stage, studied it in depth and it has haunted me for years. The Plot is based loosely on something that actually happened - a paragraph in a newspaper inspired Shaffer to write this, a thing it is worth bearing in mind when approaching the text - there is a grain of truth in it. Dr Dysart treats disturbed young people. He is asked to take on one Alan Strang, a lad who has comitted a horrible crime - blinding several horses. It is Dysart's job to try and unravel Strang's life and to make sense of what drove him to this act. The world he enters is a troubling one ...  Read the complete review
